Can’t get lost…

So, aside from the new Frightened Rabbit album I’ll be out of the world for (Stream via Myspace), what is good in music world?

Well, Zula Sound Bar is a pretty decent spot.

Located on the infamous (or so I’ve been told…) Long Street, Zula offers a variety of musical tastes and live performances.  Apparently they play live music on Thursday nights, so after a few drinks (and a hand rolled cigar) at Cape to Cuba (an American’s first experience with Cuban beer… thanks Cold-War trade embargo’s…. welcome to the future) a friend and I decide to head over.

After getting there and figuring we were done drinking, but not done partying we scrounged together the 20 rand (about $2.80 USD) to buy the cheapest cigarettes we could find (Princton’s) and chill out and enjoy some DJ’s live set… I don’t think I ever got his name.  He was alright, I mean for a “random” Thursday.  Still, it was no MSTRKRFT or A-Trak

He did mostly disco type shit, a lot of Michale Jackson tunes/samples, which made me smile.  (And dance.) Eventually he kinda went into a lot of Drum and Bass/Jungle type stuff with some hip-hop (he played LUPE!) mixed in…  Our group of two grew to about 6 of us temporary expatriates and we danced into the night… well kinda… I had to peace out a bit early to catch the Critical Mass in the morning.

Really I can’t write a venue review, or tell you what I thought.  I had some fun that night and really the music wasn’t the main course, but I can say without question Zula’s offered a fun venue to chill with friends and catch some of the esteemed Cape Town Drum and Bass scene.

It’s a shame I missed the Jazz scene here, which is spouse to be right on.  Either way the vegan cup cakes @ Brown’s are out of this world.  He’s worth the visit alone.  “Blessed”

Hotep.
